Privacy

Privacy has always been an issue with new media and social media specifically. And now more than ever it has been magnified with social media giants like Twitter, Facebook, and Google, being brought to court for their privacy issues. Many of us are told to be careful of what you post online because it will be there forever. With the amount of people using social media now, it can be screenshotted and passed around before it gets deleted. Social media engineers have created algorithms to guess what someone likes and show them more of that as a way to keep them on the app. I think Netflix's documentary, "The Social Dilemma," explains in great detail the privacy and confidentiality issues of social media.

  1. I like your idea of "Many of us are told to be careful of what you post online because it will be there forever." I remember one story about Andrew Fldmar, a veteran Canadian psychotherapist. He was on the Canadian border preparing to receive a friend visiting. The border guards found an article by Andrew Fldmar in a search engine, this article mentions his use of psychedelic drugs 40 years earlier, and because of this article Andrew was asked not to enter the U.S forever. A small mistake that had been forgotten by society for 40 years was permanently remembered by the Internet. Today, people's privacy is losing commonly. And it's terrible for people that once people upload personal status to the Internet, the traces of information will be permanently saved.

  2. I agree with you that privacy has always been an issue especially within social media platforms. You can say that nothing is safe in the online world and we have to be really careful what we share with other people. I have watched the documentary "The Social Dilemma" and I suggest everyone to watch so they can get a better idea of what's going on in the online world.

  3. I also agree that privacy has been a big issue when it comes to social media. You can't even talk to the person closest to you without having an inkling of whether someone can see this information or not. There was a video of Mark Zuckerberg being asked very personal questions by a judge and Mark was not answering because it was private information. Though he declines to answer, he is also the reason why Facebook knows what you are messaging. I believe that confidentiality should be kept because it is well within our rights.
